Things Der Zeit - Hefte für substantive democracy was a theory magazine oriented towards grassroots democracy with libertarian content.

The magazine was founded in 1947 by left, German-Jewish emigrants in the USA around the libertarian journalist Josef Weber (1901–1959), who had distanced himself from his Trotskyist past. It was published by the London publishing house Contemporary Press , where the English-language sister magazine Contemporary Issues - a magazine for a democracy of content - was also published . The emigrants involved in the magazine lived u. a. in New York, London, Johannesburg and Zurich and usually wrote their articles under code names. Josef Weber (under the pseudonym Ernst Zander) and Ulrich Jacobs (under the pseudonym Paul Brass) wrote the first number. Issues in the first year included Germany and world development , Kurt Tucholsky's legacy , collective guilt and the Marshall Plan , The Ring of the Nibelung , Warning of Left Nationalism , For a Solution to the Palestine Question . In 1962 an edition on the Eichmann trial appeared .

The group of editors claimed to have a unique political and theoretical position among the various groups in German exile and the European post-war left, which was located both between and above the various factions of the international labor movement before and after the Second World War . After 1945, they abandoned Marxist theorems such as the leading role of the proletariat and its dictatorship on the way to socialist society, but at the same time stuck to historical materialism and the Marxian critique of political economy . The members of this group paid for their intellectual and political independence with political lack of influence and lack of representation.

Since the number 55 (April 1992), Dinge der Zeit has been published by anyway . With issue 58/59 the publication of the magazine was stopped. Issues 55 to 58/59 (August 1997) include a. also contributions by Noam Chomsky .

The edition was 3000-4000. The format was DIN A5 and comprised around 90 pages.
