Dint Island (from English dint ' bump , depression' ) is a 2.5 km long island , 3 km off the northwest coast of the Antarctic Alexander I Island .
The first sighting from the air probably goes back to participants in the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939-1941). Aerial photographs of the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947-1948) were used in 1960 by the British geographer Derek Searle from the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey for mapping. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named the island that way in 1961 because the south side of the island is characterized by the deepening of a striking mountain basin .
