Diogenes Euergetes
Diogenes Euergetes was the Macedonian city commander in Athens , who died in 229 BC. BC handed over the port of Piraeus to the Athenians, making Athens free from foreign military occupation for the first time in 65 years. Although Diogenes had been paid the very substantial bribe of 150 talents , gratitude seemed appropriate. In any case, he was named a “benefactor” ( Euergetes ) of the city, games, the Diogeneia ( Διογένεια ), set up in his honor , and a gymnasium named after him, the Diogeneion .
