Working climate index

Working climate index for the past few years

The Austrian Working Climate Index is an indicator of job and income satisfaction based on personal surveys of employees . It is scientifically interesting because of the relatively large number of around 42,000 people interviewed so far. Particular attention is paid to the respondents' income and satisfaction.

History and creation

The Austrian “Working Climate Index” was collected for the first time in June 1997 by the Upper Austria Chamber of Labor . The survey of 25 answers is carried out by the institutes IFES and SORA . 900 people are interviewed quarterly. The index is recalculated with two surveys each time, i.e. a total of 1,800 interviews.

Use and comparability

Through the direct questioning of employees, the “Working Climate Index” has the advantage of keeping statistical biases due to the bias of the survey institution low.

The effects of economic changes, such as the economic crisis , are particularly evident in the values. These are used by the employees to illustrate the situation and problems of the employees, e.g. B. from unions . With the “Working Climate Index” they argue for an improvement in working conditions compared to the employers' associations . An analysis by industry is also possible and is used to analyze sub-areas of the labor market. The general public is familiar with the “Working Climate Index” because it has looked at the situation of part-time and women’s work in the media . The DGB-Index Gute Arbeit is comparable to the “Arbeitsklima Index” , but due to a rather short time series it cannot provide a comparable amount of data. In Luxembourg , the Luxembourg Chamber of Employees has introduced a similar index. In addition, the index is part of an offensive by the European Parliament to improve working conditions.

Sub-areas

In addition to the “Working Climate Index”, the Chamber of Labor's research on the working climate also deals with the health of employees, the problems of executives and the expectations of the unemployed .
