Dipaia

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Di'paia ( Greek  Δίπαια , Latin Dipaea ; inhabitants: Διπαιεύς , plural: Διπαιεῖς ) was an ancient Greek city in Arcadia , in the Mainalia countryside, perhaps directly on the Helisson river or in the Mainalios mountains, in any case near Tegea , for Herodotus also mentions Dipaia according to Tegea in connection with five battles with which 470 BC. The Spartans regained supremacy in the Peloponnese .

Later the inhabitants of Dipaia had to leave their city. They were probably settled together with other Arcadian cities in the city of Megalopolis , newly founded by the Thebans (371 BC).

The exact location of the city is unknown. Only mentioned but not described by Pausanias , it is still often identified by travel guides and locals today with the ruins near Davia (= Δαβιά) and therefore with Davia itself (= medieval Tavia), the main town of today's Falanthos community .
