Dirck Dircksz Santvoort
Dirck Dircksz Santvoort (* 1610 in Amsterdam ; † 1680 there ) was a Dutch painter.
Dirck Santvoort was a son of the painter Dirck Pietersz Bontepaert and Truytgen Pietersdr .; on his mother's side he was a great-grandson of Pieter Aertsen . His older brother was the landscape painter Pieter Dircksz Santvoort (1603–1635). Dirck probably received his first training from his father, from whom no work has survived. There is no evidence for the thesis that he also studied under Rembrandt, although he was undeniably influenced by the older artists.
From around 1635 Santvoort showed himself to be an independent portrait painter in his typically sober style. At that time he also became the most important Amsterdam painter of children's portraits. Although he was almost seventy years old, he appears to have only painted over a period of about ten years, as no paintings by him are known after 1645.
He was buried in Amsterdam on March 9, 1680.
