Direct routing

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Direct routing allows the public telephone system ( PSTN ) to be linked to the Microsoft telephone system via a Session Boarder Controller (SBC) . This allows the connection of any SIP trunk or a customer's own telephone system including analogue end devices.

Types of direct routing

Direct routing on site

With direct forwarding, a customer-owned SBC can be connected to almost any phone trunk or to a third-party PSTN device. The SBC routes the incoming calls to the Microsoft telephone system according to the configuration .

Direct routing enables:

  • Using a Non-Microsoft Certified PSTN Trunk with the Microsoft Telephone System.
  • Interoperability between customer-owned telephone systems, such as a PBX system ( Private Branch Exchange ), analog devices and the Microsoft telephone system.

The following manufacturers offer Session Boarder Controllers with support for direct routing:

Direct routing via a provider

When using a direct routing provider, there is no need to operate or maintain a customer's own session boarder controller. The provider connects the customer's phone number through porting or new registration with the help of its telephony infrastructure with the customer's Microsoft 365 tenant including the Microsoft telephone system and then mediates incoming and outgoing calls between Microsoft teams and the public telephone network.

There are currently only a limited number of direct routing providers.

Direct routing via managed service provider (hosted SBC)

Expert system houses and managed service providers with experience in the telephony environment sometimes offer the management of a session boarder controller, including its hosting in the cloud, as a service or provide a session boarder controller as a gateway for the customer.

The following providers offer hosted SBC or an SBC as a gateway on site.
