Dired (from dir ectory ed itor ) is a free file manager . The program was the first visual directory editor . The usage is similar to other text-based file managers like the Midnight Commander .
Dired was developed around 1974 by Stan Kugell at the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (SAIL) ( Stanford University ) as a stand-alone program for PDP-10 computers.
A more recent program written by Jay Lepreau for BSD in 1980 has the same name. Richard Stallman implemented it as a script for the text editor Emacs (and relatives). It was also recreated for other systems and inspired programs like ded and served as the basis for modern window-oriented directory views.
