from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Dirk E. Zerwas (* 1968 in Aachen ) is a German elementary particle physicist at the Laboratoire de l'Accélérateur Linéaire (LAL) of the CNRS in Orsay (France).

Live and act

After graduating from the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium in Aachen in 1988 , he studied physics at the University of Heidelberg . In his diploma thesis at the Institute for High Energy Physics there (now KIP), he analyzed test beam data from a liquid argon calorimeter. He then switched to LAL, where he was involved in the ALEPH experiment of the Large Electron-Positron Collider LEP at CERN . In 1998 he received his doctorate from the Université Paris-Sud with a thesis on the measurement of properties of the W bosons and the search for new particles that appear in extensions of the Standard Model of elementary particle physics. Since completing his doctorate, he has been a researcher at the LAL in Orsay, an institution of the Institut national de physique nucléaire de physique des particules (IN2P3) in the Center National de Recherche Scientifique ( CNRS ) and the Université Paris-Sud . There he worked in the hardware area on the electronics of the calorimeter and on the software for data reconstruction of the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider LHC at CERN.

Physically, he is interested in researching the Higgs boson at the LHC and possible supersymmetric extensions of the Standard Model. In this context he is a co-founder of the SFitter collaboration, which deals with the determination of the fundamental parameters in these theories from strongly correlated measured quantities.

Since 2009 he has headed the CNRS network "Groupement De Recherche Terascale" together with colleagues from theoretical physics.

In 2008, Dirk E. Zerwas received the Thibaud Prize from the Lyon Academy of Sciences.
