Dirk Meier (prehistoric)

Dirk Meier (born October 1, 1959 in Flensburg ) is a German prehistorian .

Dirk Meier graduated from the Auguste Viktoria School in Flensburg in 1980 . From 1981 to 1983 he studied prehistory, geology and ethnology at the University of Cologne and from 1983 to 1987 at the University of Kiel . There he received his doctorate in 1987/88 with magna cum laude on Slavic archeology. In 1986 he received a travel grant from the University of Poznan (Poland). Since 1988 he has headed the coastal archeology / landscape development work group at the West Coast Research and Technology Center of the University of Kiel in Büsum . In 1998 he completed his habilitation at the University of Kiel on geoarchaeological studies in the North Sea region. During this time he led excavations in the Schleswig-Holstein North Sea coast area, especially in Eiderstedt and Dithmarschen .

He also led the EU projects "Landscape and Cultural Heritage of the Wadden Sea" and "Pathways to Cultural Landscapes". From 2003 to 2009 he represented the chair for Prehistory and Early History and Medieval Archeology at the University of Giessen . His scientific focus includes geo-archeology, coastal archeology and historical environmental research as well as archeology and history of the early and high Middle Ages. He has also published articles in scientific journals and written several books.
