The Discard - Network Service is a simple service of the Internet protocol suite . The task of the service is to discard all received data. No response will be sent. It is therefore suitable for testing and troubleshooting during the development of client programs. It is similar to / dev / null at the file system level .

In Unix systems, the discard service - just like the other simple network services ( daytime , echo, etc.) - is usually implemented directly in inetd . In Windows systems, these network services are located in the optional Windows component Simple TCP / IP services .
