Discomyza incurva is a species of the salt flies ( Ephydridae ). It wasfirst describedby Carl Fredrik Fallén in 1823 as Psilopa incurva .
features
The black flies are 2.5–3 mm long. Only the tarsi are red-brown. The flies have dark wings that they fold over each other in a sitting position over their abdomen .
distribution
Discomyza incurva is native to the Palearctic . The species occurs almost all over Europe. Their distribution area extends to North Africa, Asia Minor, the Caucasus and the Middle East . The species is also found in Japan . The fly species was introduced in North America. In 2005 it was first detected in the south of the Canadian province of Ontario .
Way of life
The typical habitat of Discomyza incurva are meadows and sand dunes. The flies can be seen almost all year round. They appear most frequently between May and June and between mid-July and September. The larvae develop in dead snails , especially of the genera Helix and Cepaea as well as the Mediterranean sand snail ( Theba pisana ).
