A discussion system is an electro-acoustic system that is used to record the spoken word (sound) within an event or conference and to reproduce it on the central loudspeaker, which is understandable for all participants. The discussion system consists of a control center and several microphone units. The control center takes over the power supply of the microphone units and can usually also control them. With larger systems, a PC / laptop with control software is used for control.

The conference call stations connected to the control center are usually installed in single-cable technology over several lines.

The conference stations have a microphone usually with a signaling element z. B. Light ring on the microphone head, a control button and a built-in speaker for support. In addition, additional functional elements can be included in the call station , e.g. B. a language selector, identification option, a display, other key elements in order to be able to vote on the same system.

Various microphone operating modes are provided for control:

  • A set number of microphone units can be active at the same time (1 to 6)
  • only one microphone can be active, according to the first in - first out principle
  • the chairman can mute all participants (background noise, unwanted acoustic feedback )
  • Registration of speeches, which are later approved by the chairman
  • z. B. via a touch screen with geographical arrangement of the participants

Control via a network ( LAN ) from a central control room is also conceivable.

The control center usually has additional connections to connect other equipment, e.g. B. Recording recorder for recording the spoken word, connections to a camera system with automatic control via the participant microphone units .

In connection with a simultaneous interpreting system , only one microphone should be active because of any background noise that may be disturbing to the interpreter.

The technology used can be transmission by cable, radio or infrared light. The transmission can be analog or digital.
