Dissidia Final Fantasy (OT: Japanese デ ィ シ デ ィ ア フ ァ イ ナ ル フ ァ ン タ ジ ー , Dishidia Fainaru Fantajī ) is a fighting game by Square Enix , which was developed on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the role-playing game series. Square Enix itself describes the genre of the PSP title as Dramatic Progressive Action .

The player takes control of the protagonists of the first ten games of the Final Fantasy series, who fight against the optionally playable antagonists of those games in their own story campaign. In addition, two further optional characters from Final Fantasy XI and Final Fantasy XII can be unlocked.

The game has been available in Japan since December 18, 2008 and sold a total of 910,000 copies by August 2009, making Dissidia the fourth best-selling PSP game in Japan. In February 2017 it was officially announced that the title will also be released for consoles and will receive a story mode there.

Game system

During a fight, two opponents move through one of 24 different three-dimensional arenas, in which locomotion is not only possible by running and jumping, but also by tracking or by so-called quick maneuvers - the latter allow a character to run up walls or slide along predetermined paths. Furthermore, some arenas contain chasms that harm an opponent if he falls into one and cannot free himself from it in time.

The aim of a fight is to reduce the opponent's life points (HP) to zero. To do this, you use various LP attacks, the strength of which depends on the attacker's courage. Each character goes into battle with a set courage value and is able to increase their own value by performing courage attacks and at the same time lower the opponent's. The strength of a courage attack depends on the attacking character's attack value and the defensive value of his opponent - these two attributes, as well as the maximum HP and the starting courage value, can be increased by equipping equipment and accessories. If the courage value of a character falls into the negative range, he suffers a so-called demoralization, while his opponent receives the courage of the arena and thus experiences a significant increase in courage. A demoralized character can no longer cause Courage or HP damage, but if you successfully carry out an HP attack, the Courage value is always set to zero before it returns to its original value. This is also a way of escaping demoralization. Furthermore, the own or the opponent's courage value can be influenced by summoning one of the 51 Esper available.

Another important element in combat is EX energy. Many attacks generate this energy which, by collecting, fills a character's EX bar, but occasionally it manifests itself in an EX core that fills that bar a lot when touched. Once this is completely filled, a character can switch to EX mode, which grants him special, mainly character-specific abilities. If an LP attack is carried out successfully during the EX mode, this can be linked to an EX outbreak. This is a relatively strong, inevitable HP attack, the power of which can be increased if the player follows certain instructions, such as pressing certain keys, which differ depending on the character.

Version differences

There are some differences between the Japanese version of Dissidia Final Fantasy and the western version of the game. The western version, for example, includes a new arcade mode. In addition, adjustments have been made to the balance of the characters and there are some additional events in the game. The tutorial has been shortened considerably and guest appearances by well-known characters add to the excitement.

But Japanese players can also enjoy these additional features. As usual with successful Square Enix titles, there will be a so-called international version of the game for the Japanese market, which is nothing other than the western version. This version will be released on November 1st, 2009 in Japan under the name Dissidia Final Fantasy Universal Tuning . It includes all changes made for the western market. Also the English language dubbing. In Japan it will be available as UMD and download.

continuation

At the beginning of September, the Japanese Shonen Jump revealed the sequel to Dissidia Final Fantasy called Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy . In terms of content, however, the title is a prequel. Dissidia producer and character designer Tetsuya Nomura said: "In Dissidia Final Fantasy, the 13th battle was fought and marked the end of the battle of the gods. But this time we're going to cover the 12th battle, so we named the game with that meaning in mind . " Duodecim is Latin for 12. The first new playable character for Dissidia Duodecim was Lightning from Final Fantasy XIII . Other new characters include Kain Highwind from Final Fantasy IV, Gilgamesh from Final Fantasy V, Tifa Lockhart from Final Fantasy VII, Laguna Loire from Final Fantasy VIII, Yuna from Final Fantasy X, Prishe from Final Fantasy XI and Vaan from Final Fantasy XII.
