Dissonance (from Latin : dis = "different, apart" and sonare = "to sound") is used in the following contexts:

  • in music for tone combinations “in need of resolution”, see consonance and dissonance
  • in psychology for an internal tension resulting from the contradiction between decision and perception, see cognitive dissonance
  • figuratively z. B. to characterize discrepancies in social groups or discussions
  • for the differences in buyer behavior before and after buying a product
