In Prague district Žižkov the founded in 1967, is Divadlo Járy Cimrmana ( Theater of Jára Cimrman ), generally known under the symbol DJC . The theater is one of the cabaret stages in Czechoslovakia .

history

Under this name, the theater played in its prime. The building at Štítného 5, where the theater has been playing since 1992, was built in 1875 and served as a stage from the early 1920s. After a restoration in 1976, the Žižkovské divadlo theater played there , and when Divadlo Járy Cimrmana moved there in 1992 , it was renamed Žižkovské divadlo Járy Cimrmana and has been using this compound name ever since. It was thoroughly restored in 1996.

In this theater only plays are performed that revolve around the fictional character of a universal genius named Jára Cimrman .

The best-known pieces in the repertoire come from the authors Ladislav Smoljak and Zdeněk Svěrák .

Stages

The DJC has had many problems in the past to find a suitable stage for its performances. The first performance took place - still in a private setting - on June 19, 1967 in the Prague club and concert hall Malostranská beseda , where the theater could then perform for the next five years. After it had had to leave this stage in January 1972 on a government order, it found asylum in the rooms of the Reduta Theater in the same month ; shortly thereafter operations in Reduta were interrupted as a result of an instruction from the same authority, and the Divadlo Járy Cimrmana was banned from performing anywhere in Prague. Despite this ban, it was able to perform in Divadlo Na zábradlí from June 1972 and then returned to Reduta in September 1972, where it played until 1974. In November 1974 the DJC was "dismissed" by the state theater authority, was not allowed to keep any props or costumes and the like and played provisionally in various places, partly in student dormitories, etc. From March 1975 the authorities again negotiated with the DJC, the theater was allowed from September 1975 use a small stage with 150 seats. When the stage master Andrej Krob premiered Havel's adaptation of The Beggar's Opera not far from Prague on November 1, 1975 , it was described as anti-state, Krob voluntarily left the theater in order not to harm him. The DJC was able to use the stage for another eight years, until it had to leave the premises under a pretext in December and again could only use the temporary stages and the premises of the Strašnické divadlo theater - and in some cases had to fight censorship. From 1992 DJC moved to its current stage and performed abroad.
