Jára (da) Cimrman is a fictional character and serves as the main character of the Divadlo Járy Cimrmana (Jára Cimrman Theater), which is devoted to his alleged life and work.

About Jára Cimrman

The figure appeared for the first time in a radio program in 1966 and, during socialism, also developed into an object of silent resistance and a projection surface for possibilities to freely shape one's own life that were not feasible at the time. As a result, Cimrman became a “virtual” national hero whose virtual existence has been cultivated and developed by numerous people and the media over the years through reports on fictional events from his life.

The main authors and main actors of the plays performed in the theater are Zdeněk Svěrák , Ladislav Smoljak and (in the early years) Jiří Šebánek (1930–2007). They pretend to research Cimrman scientifically and introduce their audiences to their respective new discoveries.

The theater was created in 1966 from a radio program, the "Alcohol-free wine tavern to the spider" ("Nealkoholická vinárna U Pavouka", first broadcast December 23, 1966), the first play (?) "Akt" followed by 14 other pieces over the next 30 years.

The most important characteristics of this theater are in addition to the typical form (the performance is divided into a pseudo-scientific seminar and a play allegedly written by Cimrman) also the use of "non-actors" (are amateur actors meant?) And inventions (?) ( Pretending the existence of Cimrman). It is characterized by strongly parodic elements.

All performances have one theme: the exploration of Cimrman's work. The actors play scientists - cimrmanologists - who present new finds and discoveries in each piece (in the seminar part) and then perform a piece from the hand of the “master”. The performances are usually sold out well in advance.

When Czech television organized a survey “The Greatest Czech” in the Czech Republic in 2005, Jára Cimrman may even have taken the lead, outperforming personalities such as Wenceslaus of Bohemia , Charles IV , Jan Hus , Comenius and Václav Havel . However, after a meeting with the license owner BBC, he was excluded from the competition as a fictional personality, which many Czechs found outrageous. The number of votes cast for Cimrman has not been published.

Some streets in the Czech Republic are named after Jára Cimrman. In addition, an asteroid discovered in 1996 by the Czech astronomer Zdeněk Moravec bears the name (7796) Járacimrman . In 2004, the Czech arachnologist František Kovařík named the Thai scorpion Heterometrus cimrmani after Cimrman in his first description and stated: “Named after Jára Cimrman, a very well-known Czech polymath . Jára Cimrman bred large heterometri from Thailand and Malaysia and noted that there must be two species with different sexual dimorphism (Heterometrus spinifer and the species described here). Unfortunately, he did not publish his observations. "

Between 1967 and 2007 there were almost 11,000 performances, which corresponds to an average of 275 performances per year. The performances are often sold out up to two months in advance. In addition, nearly a million records, audio cassettes and CDs were sold.
