Heterometrus cimrmani is acommon scorpion of the family Scorpionidae in Thailand and Vietnam .

description

Adult animals are 90 to 115 millimeters long and have a greenish shimmering black basic color. The combs of the comb organ have 15 to 18 teeth in both sexes. Compared to the female scorpions, the males have longer but not narrower femora and patella of the pedipalps . Their chelae , however, are longer and narrower, and the moving part of the scissors is longer than the fixed part. In both sexes, the chelae are slightly lobed and their upper side bears granules arranged in rows. The telson is hairy and elongated, with a poisonous bladder longer than the venomous sting .

distribution

The terra typica of Heterometrus cimrmani was specified in the first description as the area around Trang , the capital of the province of Trang in southern Thailand. Thailand and Vietnam are named as the distribution area for the species.

Systematics

Initial description

The first description was made by František Kovařík as part of his 2004 revision of the genus Heterometrus . The basis for the description were specimens kept by Kovařík in the terrarium, which together with their descendants form the majority of the type specimens.

Type material

The holotype is a male animal that, like the allotype, comes from the Trang area and was kept in the terrarium by Kovařík. The allotype gave birth to 18 offspring, which were raised by Kovařík. From these progeny, two young animals after the first molt , one after the second molt, one after the third molt, one after the fourth molt, two subadult scorpions after the fifth molt and four female scorpions after the sixth molt were preserved and defined as paratypes. Nine other paratypes come from various localities in southern Thailand, one from the area around Saigon in Vietnam . All the type material is in the František Kovařík collection in Prague.

etymology

The species name is a scientific joke . It refers to Jára Cimrman , a scholar invented in 1966, about whose alleged scientific achievements numerous stories circulate in the Czech Republic . In the first description it says:

“Named after Jára Cimrman, a well known Czech renaissance man. Jára Cimrman bred large Heterometrus from Thailand and Malaysia and in his log noted that they must be two species with different sexual dimorphism ( Heterometrus spinifer and the species described here). Regrettably, he has not published the observation "

“Named after Jára Cimrman, a well-known Czech polymath. Jára Cimrman bred large Heterometrus from Thailand and Malaysia and noted that there must be two species with different sexual dimorphism (Heterometrus spinifer and the species described here). Unfortunately, he did not publish his observations. "

With the naming, Kovařík referred to the popular representation, according to which Jára Cimrman grew up as a girl until he was 18, as his gender was only recognized at that time. In fact, it is a characteristic of some species in the genus Heterometrus, including Heterometrus cimrmani, that only adult male scorpions allow the species to be distinguished according to morphological criteria.

Kovařík has repeatedly named scorpions after Cimrman, without giving a detailed reason as in the first description of Heterometrus cimrmani . So far this has affected Butheoloides cimrmani (2003), Parabuthus cimrmani (2004) and Chaerilus cimrmani (2012).
