František Kovařík (arachnologist)

František Kovařík (born 1965 ) is a Czech arachnologist .

František Kovařík completed his training as an electrical engineer. However, he was interested in insects and arachnids , especially scorpions , which he kept, bred and photographed in terrariums. His activities in terraristics led to a scientific study of arachnology .

Today Kovařík is a recognized authority in the biological nomenclature and the taxonomy and biogeography of scorpions. His specialty are the scorpions of Asia and northeastern Africa. He works closely with numerous academic institutions and zoological research collections around the world.

Kovařík has written numerous publications. He began with popular science articles in magazines for terrarium science. Several monographs have appeared since the 1990s and he has now published a large number of articles in scientific journals.

Kovařík has more than 100 species and genera of scorpions described and several revisions higher taxa performed. His research collection is the largest privately owned collection of scorpions in the world.
