The Bothriuridae are a family of the scorpions (Scorpiones) with about 120 species in 14 genera .

features

Compared to other scorpions, the Bothriuridae are mainly characterized by the atypical shape of the breastplate. This does not consist of a five-sided plate, but of two transverse strips and is significantly wider than it is long.

distribution and habitat

The representatives of the Bothriuridae are distributed in temperate and tropical regions in South America , Africa , Asia and Australia . Species of the genus Cercophonius have even been found in the Himalayas . They live under stones and in crevices as well as in small, sometimes up to 40 centimeters deep, caves.
