A diversant (from Latin: diversus = turned away ) is in communist parlance a hostile agent , saboteur, disruptor who carries out acts of sabotage , disruptive maneuvers and subversion known as diversion or acts of diversion .

The term originated in the 20th century from the Russian Диверсия ( diversija = turning backwards) - later also referred to as counterrevolution .
