Division II (chess)
The Division II is a league in the Swedish team chess.
1953 to 1987: second highest division
In 1952 the Congress of the Swedish Chess Federation decided to carry out the Allsvenskan from 1953 onwards in tournaments with four teams each instead of the previous knockout system . Division II was the second highest division, it was divided into the two parallel seasons Norra (North) and Södra (South). The two season winners rose to Division I , third and fourth of both seasons rose and were replaced by the promoted Division III. At the Congress of the Swedish Chess Federation in 1968 a reform of the Allsvenskan was decided. As a result, in the 1968/69 season, Division I consisted of four squadrons with six teams each, Division II was not carried out that season. After it was decided in 1969 at the Congress of the Sveriges Schackförbund to change the hosting mode of the Allsvenskan team championship again, Division II was reintroduced as the second highest division. It consisted of four squadrons, which were initially named Norra 1 , Norra 2 , Södra 1 and Södra 2 . From the 1980/81 season, the season names were Norra , Östra (East), Södra and Vestra (West). In each season, eight teams played a simple round-robin tournament. The winner of each season rose to Division I, the seventh and eighth of each season were relegated to Division III. In two seasons there were different promotion or relegation regulations. While Division III was not yet set up in the 1969/70 season and therefore no relegation from Division II was planned, the introduction of the Elitserien for the 1987/88 season required different regulations in the 1986/87 season. The first-placed did not rise directly into the Elitserien, but had the chance to qualify in a qualifying tournament with the fourth and fifth of Division I for the Elitserien. The runners-up were qualified for Division I of the 1987/88 season, all other teams had to play in Division II in the 1987/88 season.
