The Division I in 1953 was the fourth Swedish team championship in chess ( Allsvenskan ) while the first edition in a league mode with ascent and descent.

At the congress of the Swedish Chess Federation in 1952 it was decided that from 1953 the Allsvenskan would no longer be carried out in the knockout system , but in tournaments with four teams each with Division I as the highest division. The four semi-finalists of Allsvenskan 1952/53 were eligible to participate in the first division of Division I, and the two first-placed winners of Division I and the two winners of the relays of Division II acquired the right to start in the following events. The four teams played a simple round-robin tournament , first the number of team points decided on the placement, then the number of board points.

The competitions were held in Karlstad on October 31st and November 1st .

Tournament course

The defending champion Stockholm Södra SS defeated all competitors and was thus again Swedish team champions. As runner-up, the SK Kamraterna Göteborg achieved relegation, while the teams from Värmland and Jämtland had to relegate.
