Divisorium and Tenacle. Around 1850. Focke Museum Bremen.

The manuscript holder is an aid for the typesetter in manual typesetting and holds the manuscript to be typeset .

It consists of the tenacle (lat. Tenaculum , holding means) and the divisorium (lat. Divisor , distributor). The tenacle has a pin or a screw clamp to be attached to the edge of the case . It keeps the template upright and prevents the compartments of the type case from being covered by it. The divisorium is a fork made of wood or metal that is pushed over the tenacle, holds the manuscript sheet and at the same time marks the line currently to be set. The manuscript holder was used when lead type was still operated by hand in chord .
