Dixi bicycles (before 1921 also Dixi-Wartburg) was a bicycle brand of the "Fahrzeugfabrik Eisenach, branch of Gothaer Waggonfabrik AG".

Brand history

The brand name "Dixi" is derived from the brand " Dixi " used from 1904 for the automobile production branch of the Eisenach vehicle factory . Unlike in the automotive sector, the " Wartburg " brand, which had previously been established before both sectors, was retained as a brand name for bicycles until around 1920. Only then did "Dixi" become the brand name for the bicycles manufactured in the factory until the end of production in 1929. For a short time there was also a parallel use of the two brand names for bicycles. An advertisement from 1920 shows that the manufacturer's racing bikes were advertised as "Dixi-Wartburg".

In the 1920s, the plant had a well-developed dealer network with general agencies in Düsseldorf , Hamburg and Berlin .

Following the takeover of the Eisenach vehicle factory by Bayerische Motorenwerke in 1928 , the plant ceased production of bicycles in 1929.

From around 1934 until the 1950s, the brand name "Dixi" was used by the manufacturer Patria. In addition, various "clothing manufacturers" in the early 1950s, such as BFEM, name, insignia and logo of the classic Dixi year wheels of the 1920s, so that an exact dating can often seem difficult at first glance. In the 1980s, the manufacturer Kettler produced a bicycle with the name suffix Dixi.

Model range and production figures 1921–1929

The 1926 catalog shows a range of 8 standard models , which in addition to the men 's bikes Englandrad and touring bikes also included two ladies' bikes and children's bikes. The distinguishing feature of most Dixi bicycles, in addition to the riveted six-pitch sprocket and curved struts, was the distinctive steering head plate. The triangle that tapers downwards shows the well-known lettering "Dixi" with the letter x wandering downwards. Above the lettering is the well-known centaur as a symbol of the Dixi works. It does not seem that there have been any notable changes to the products under the Dixi brand compared to the previous brand "Wartburg". The well-known illustrations and the few surviving copies show the bicycles in the same shape.

Exact production figures are not known. The Eisenach vehicle factory was one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in Germany in the 1920s.
