The Aravis is a mine-protected, all-wheel drive transport vehicle made in France. The manufacturer is the company Nexter Systems . Its designation in the French army is "VBHP - Véhicule blindé hautement protégé" (Highly protected, armored vehicle). The similarity to the ATF Dingo is unmistakable .

history

The vehicle was developed by the Nexter company at its own expense and without a government mandate and was presented for the first time on June 16, 2008 at Eurosatory . On April 16, 2009, the Ministry of Defense ordered 15 vehicles with the “Plan for the recovery of the French economy” (Plan de relance économique de la France de 2008-2009). They should be used by the pioneers in Afghanistan and complement the Buffalo and the mine sweeper and booby trap detection device Souvim . The contract was worth 20 million euros.

As standard, the vehicle is equipped with a special mount with a telescopic sight and a 12.7 mm machine gun, which is also used on the VAB . The delivery took place at the end of 2009. The “13 e régiment du genie” in Valdahon was equipped .

Eleven vehicles were delivered to the pioneers in Afghanistan at the end of September 2010. On November 11, 2010, a vehicle crashed down a slope and was damaged beyond repair. The crew got away with minor injuries.

The operational maintenance costs in 2013 amounted to 125,000 euros per vehicle.

The vehicle in the 12 ton class was ordered to transport up to seven men including their equipment. In addition there is a driver, an additional commander is not planned.

The C-130 , A400M and Globemaster C-17 can be air -lifted .

The armor corresponds to the standard STANAG 4569 level 4, resistant to armor-piercing ammunition up to 14.5 × 114 mm, land mines up to 10 kg load and against shrapnel of caliber 155 mm from a distance of 30 m. ( Satisfactory results were obtained when simulating a 50 kg booby trap at a distance of 5 m.).

The chassis comes from the Unimog U-5000 , which is equipped with a Mercedes-Benz OM 924 LA engine and an automatic transmission.

As there is hardly any outside view other than through the windshield, the Aravis was equipped with seven cameras that give the crew a complete all-round view.

A central tire pressure control system is part of the equipment.
