Justus Pabst
Carl Justus Pabst (born March 6, 1875 in Widminnen , Lötzen district , † August 30, 1958 in Lünen - Brambauer ) was a German homeland researcher and photographer . For over 40 years he was a correspondent at the Achenbach colliery in Lünen-Brambauer and worked out extensive records and manuscripts about the noble houses and farms in the immediate vicinity. In addition, from 1900 to 1958 he documented countless landscapes, townscapes, aristocratic houses, farms, including the events of the war and the effects of the Second World War in the Lünen area, and made portraits of citizens of Lüner.
Life
Justus Pabst grew up in a wealthy family in Bromberg . As the son of the royal district physicist Carl Pabst and grandson of the royal music director, he was able to attend the royal high school in Bromberg and graduated from high school there in 1894. After he met Helene Pabst, born Scheuermann (born March 12, 1875 in Berlin ; † March 12, 1940 in Lünen) married on February 24, 1900, his son Walter Pabst was born on January 16, 1902 in Insterburg .
From 1903 to 1945 Pabst worked as a correspondent at the Minister Achenbach colliery in Lünen-Brambauer and found his new home in this district of Lüner. In particular, he was responsible for the French correspondence at the mine. During his work at the Minister Achenbach colliery, he published numerous articles for the company newspaper and illustrated them with self-made photographs.
Pabst also worked part-time with photography on a technical and artistic level . He dealt with local history topics, wrote manuscripts and completed his family chronicle . In addition, he wrote genealogies about neighboring noble houses and wrote extensive chronicles about castles and palaces.
His photo series about the destruction of bombs during the Second World War in the Lünen area are of great importance, as are his photographic documentation of the farms in the Brambauer district.
During the Second World War, Pabst gave a large part of his archive to the city of Lünen for safekeeping. This stored it together with the municipal archives for security in the Wenne house ( Eslohe , Sauerland ), where both archives suffered losses for the most part due to looting and vandalism by Polish slave laborers in 1945. According to Pabst's records, around 3,300 photos of Lünen were destroyed.
Due to his local history activities, the Institute for Local History at the Pedagogical Academy Dortmund (since 1965 University of Dortmund ) appointed him in 1948 as its corresponding member. During his lifetime he left a large part of his work to the Lünen City Archives , especially photographs of the cityscape of Lüner.
He died after a long illness in his home in Lünen-Brambauer. Due to disagreements between him and the city of Lünen (presumably because of the war damage to his archive), Pabst changed his will and bequeathed most of his estate to the Dortmund city archive . It was not until the 1980s that the city of Dortmund handed over the photo archive and numerous Pabst manuscripts to the city of Lünen; this inventory is currently (2016) being indexed in the Lünen city archive.
A street in the east of the Brambauer district has been named after him since 1986
