Djerbahood was a street art event that brought together artists from all over the world in Erriadh on the Tunisian island of Djerba . 250 works of art were created on site. The project was carried out in June 2014 by the Itinerrance de Paris gallery .

The project

The name of the project, Djerbahood, was chosen by the organizing team based on the installation by Rodolphe Cintorino at the entrance to the town, which shows the words "THE HOOD" in giant letters. Erriadh is also known by the Arabic name El Haar Sghira, "the little neighborhood". To create the 250 individual and collective works of art, the artists used over 4,500 paint cans.

A virtual inspection of the village streets of the project was possible on the official website of the Tunisian telephone company Ooredoo Tunisia.

"... a unique artistic adventure in the world of urban art and an exuberant movement in a developing country."

- Mehdi Ben Cheikh, founder of the project and director of the Itinerrance de Paris gallery

The place

Erriadh was chosen by the founders of the project because of its traditional architecture. Djerbahood has made the place a popular tourist destination. Even more important, however, is that the entire island, which suffered from mismanagement in garbage disposal after the 2011 revolution, was brought into the limelight in a positive way as a result of the festival. Djerbahood was also an interpersonal experience that brought locals and artists together. The team was supported by local residents and traders in setting up the installations and procuring material. Mehdi Ben Cheikh had to convince the local people to entrust the walls of their property to the artists. While some residents were initially against it, they too later approached the organizing committee and the artists and asked them to paint their walls too.

Participating artists

150 street artists of 30 different nationalities took part in the event. Including ADD Fuel, Aya Tarek, C215, Fintan Magee, eL Seed, Phlegm, Hendrik Beikirch , Jace, ROA , Swoon, Julien Malland - aka Seth - a French artist who on several episodes of the series Les Nouveaux Explorateurs collaborated .

reporting

The event was extensively covered in hundreds of articles in 70 countries. The New York Times, The Guardian, Le Monde, Liberation, The Huffington Post, La Repubblica, Vogue Italia, Al Jazeera, BBC News, Le Mouv 'and France Inter reported, among others.

In addition, an online documentary series with ten episodes was produced and published on Creativ ARTE . It shows backstage scenes with the artists.
