ROA (* 1975 in Ghent ) is a Belgian street and graffiti artist. His real name is not known.

life and work

From an early age, animals have been very fascinating to ROA. He took skeletons and birds that had fallen from the nest home and painted them. At the age of 13 he got to know graffiti . He perfected the New York-based classic style over time and earned part of his living with graffiti workshops for children. ROA found his own style after bringing the subject of animals to the street.

He painted them on the places where they had lived or were still alive. There were huge, sometimes disturbing murals, mainly in black and white and phenomenal attention to detail.

ROA was u. a. invited to the City Leaks Urban Art Festival Cologne 2011. Here in Cologne-Ehrenfeld he painted a skinned hare with a bloody body, which was hung by its feet. The artist wanted to point out the everyday atrocities. The work of art initially caused outrage among local residents, but was then accepted after heated discussions.

Doel

In the ghost village of Doel near Antwerp , below the Doel nuclear power station, ROA created some critical paintings. The Belgian government is trying to expand the port there.

East End

At the Crystal Ship Street Art Festival 2016 in Ostend , he impressed with a huge painting on which six small animals typical of the city are stacked with their eyes closed.
