Soho Málaga , also known as "Soho, Barrio de las Artes", is an artists' quarter in the city center of Málaga , Spain .

history

Soho Málaga is located on an area of about twenty hectares of the so-called Ensanche de Málaga , near the port, the Alameda Principal promenade and the city park. In this area there are important cultural institutions such as the Teatro Alameda and the Center for Contemporary Art , (CAC), which with its collection with artists such as Louise Bourgeois , Olafur Eliasson , Thomas Hirschhorn , Damien Hirst , Thomas Ruff , Miquel Barceló and Santiago Sierra contributes significantly to the importance of the quarter.

In the first years of the 21st century, the idea of reactivating the zone to create a cultural district arose. This initiative was later transformed into the Soho Málaga Civic Association . The zone's logo was chosen through a citizens' competition. An urban redevelopment project of Soho Málaga was presented, which included the pedestrian zones in the streets Casas de Campo and Tomás Heredia as well as the redesign of the Alfonso Canales square.

The MAUS project was founded to promote the arts. MAUS is the abbreviation for the term: Málaga, Arte, Urbano, Soho, and promoted activities in the field of theater, photography, music - with the Soho Málaga Sound Festival - but also with stock markets, sample videos and workshops.

One of the most important interventions by MAUS was urban art , which made it possible for artists with a high national and international reputation, such as Faith47, ROA , Sal East, D'Face or Shepard Faire (Obey), to place their works on the walls of the buildings . In this way, they turned the neighborhood into a large outdoor art gallery. Renowned artists such as Rafael Alvarado, Pedro Casermeyro, Diego Santos Daniel Garbade and Chema Lumbreras began to show their work in the galleries in the district, including the gallery of the photographer Ignacio del Río. In 2018 the Museum of Imagination was inaugurated, an interactive museum about toys and science with a playful character, which already had more than 5000 visitors in the first months of the opening.
