The construction was planned in 1937 in Calle Alemania not far from the Río Guadalmedina , started immediately after the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939 and opened in 1942. It was built according to plans by Luis Gutiérrez Soto , a renowned Spanish architect of the Modern Movement , and its straight, functional lines and cubic structure follow the triangular shape of the property. After a major renovation by the architect Miguel Ángel Díaz and a renovation, the building was inaugurated in 2003 as an exhibition hall and museum. The official opening took place on February 7th, 2003 by Cristina of Spain and her husband Iñaki Urdangarin . In terms of content, the CAC is based on the model of the German art gallery (in contrast to the art museum ) with a focus on presentations of contemporary art . It is located in the Soho district , which is one of the reasons why it developed into an artists' quarter .
