Dodecals (2019)

Dodecalitten (from the Greek expression for 12 stones ) is a work of art under construction in the form of a stone circle near Kragenæs on the Danish island of Lolland .

The artwork

The work consists of 12 granite columns that are set up in a circle 40 meters in diameter. The stones are each 7 to 9 meters high and weigh 25 to 45 tons; the top 2 meters are designed as heads facing the center of the circle. In the bright hours of the day, computer-generated electroacoustic music is played from 12 seat stones in the center of the circle , which changes constantly depending on environmental data (such as the season, light situation, weather and tides). The stone circle stands about 300 meters from the coast and offers a view of the Smålandsfarvandet . Nearby is the lie passage grave Glentehøj and other Bronze Age grave mound .

The artists and the idea

Two stone pillars (2015)

The basic idea of the work of art comes from the composer Gunner Møller Pedersen and the sculptor Thomas Kadziola. Gunner Møller Pedersen invented the legend of a fictional people who immigrated to Lolland 7,500 years ago after their country of origin in what is now the Black Sea was flooded after the Bosphorus breakthrough (see water ingress into the Black Sea ).

The first chisel hit took place in November 2010, but later the two artists fell out and Pedersen left the project in 2016. Pedersen then published the book Dodekalitten: Drømmen om Lolerne ( German  Dodekalitten: The dream of the Loler ). The first five years of the project are described in the film Dodekalitten: the first five years 2009–2014 .

Instead, the composer Wayne Siegel joined the art project in 2017. He programmed and installed the acoustic sound for the property.

The sculptor Kadziola is currently working on the work. The completion of the dodecaliths is planned for 2025.
