Doege Potter Syndrome

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Doege Potter syndrome (DPS) is a paraneoplastic syndrome , in which hypoglycemia with the occurrence of non-Langerhans islet fibroids in the pleura is associated. Hypoglycemia is the result of the tumor producing insulin-like growth factors (IGF). The syndrome was described independently by Doege and Potter in 1930 , the term has been used since 2000. DPS is a rare syndrome (fewer than 100 cases were described in 1976) with a malignancy rate of 12 to 15%. Indeed, the association of hypoglycemia with fibroids is rare; In a study from 1981, only four percent of 360 solitary pleural fibromas caused hypoglycemia. These tumors are usually of large mass with a high rate of mitosis . Resection of these tumors usually resolves the symptoms.
