A documentary novel (also a documentary novel) is a socially critical and political work that draws on historical documents and scientific facts. These are processed or quoted or brought closer to the factual events. Hence, montage and collage techniques are often found in documentary novels .

Examples are Joachim Gaertner's I am full of hate - and I love that , a documentary novel from the original documents about the rampage at Columbine High School , or several works by FC Delius .
