Dolmen La Pierre de Saint-Maximin

The dolmen La Pierre de Saint-Maximin is located near the eponymous Chapelle saint Maximin, north of Foucherans in the Doubs department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The Pierre de Saint-Maximin consists of an approximately 3.0 m long, 1.0 m wide and 40 cm thick slab of limestone , which lies on two supporting stones arranged parallel at the ends and an open chamber 1.23 m wide and 57 cm high, which is oriented northwest-southeast. The Pierre de Saint-Maximin thus shows some characteristics of a dolmen. The lack of archaeological excavations and other features prevents it from being seen an authentic Neolithic dolmen. It is evidently a pseudodolmen .

Nonetheless, this may have been the site of an ancient cult. The Christianization did not succeed in dissuading the people from the old places of worship. So, in order to assert its authority, the Church has integrated the places of pagan faith, dedicated them to saints, and erected crosses and chapels.
