Dolmen du Bois de la Grande-Bay
The Dolmen du Bois de la Grande-Bay is located east of Rochefort-sur-la-Côte in the center of the Haute-Marne department in France . In France, dolmen is the generic term for Neolithic megalithic structures of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).
description
The dolmen was excavated and restored in 2005. It is about 3.0 m long and 1.5 m wide. It is surrounded by a 0.30 m high, 9.0 m long and 6.0 m wide trapezoidal cairn .
Plate dimensions
- West plate: 1.20 m × 0.76 m × 0.32 m
- East plate: 0.77 m × 0.79 m × 0.30 m
- South plate: 0.78 m × 0.70 m × 0.31 m
- Capstone: 3.50 m × 1.80 m × 0.50 m
Before the restoration, the imposing capstone was only supported by three small orthostats , two on the north and one on the south. During the renovation, a second was added on the south side. Hardly any plates were found on the east and west sides. The few panels on the east side can indicate that the access was on this side. Most of the chamber floor consists of the natural bedrock.
Excavations
The archaeological excavation of the looted complex has only revealed fragments of human bones (including at least two children and two adults), a few chips of flint and shattered pottery. The C14 dating of the bone remains suggests that the dolmens was used in the late Neolithic (around 3290 ± 110 BC).
Legend
According to legend, the capstone rises on Christmas Day and reveals a treasure. Whoever takes it must go home without opening their eyes, otherwise the treasure will turn into stones.
