Dolmen of Villard

The dolmen of Villard is located in the village of Le Lauzet-Ubaye, near Digne-les-Bains in the far north of the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in France . " Dolmen " is the generic term in France for Neolithic megalithic systems of all kinds (see: French nomenclature ).

The well-preserved dolmen is located above the old village of Ubaye at an altitude of 1240 m on the southern flank of the Pic de Morgon mountain. The chamber is covered by a plate overlying six orthostats . Access is partially blocked by a plate. A corridor consisting of a few aligned blocks can still be seen.

The dolmen, known since the 19th century, has been the subject of several excavations. It dates from the Chalcolithic and was reused in the late Bronze Age (2500–1750 BC) . Fragments of human bones (from around 40 people) and teeth were found in the sediments of this period, as well as remains of faunas (from sheep and / or goats), fragments of several vessels (beakers, bowls and bowls), tools made of flint , a copper dagger, and an arm guard as well as pearls and pendants from boar tusks.

The megalithic complex has been listed as a Monument historique since 1900 .
