Magacela dolmen

The Dolmen of Magacela or Dolmen de la Cerca del Marco is located northeast of Magacela , near Don Benito in the Comarca de La Serena in the east of the province of Badajoz in Extremadura in Spain . The La Serena region is an area with numerous archaeological remains, such as dolmens , rock carvings , cave paintings and steles , which have been extensively studied for their peculiarities.

The dolmen of Magacela, without any additions, is dated to the Chalcolithic period because of its similarities with dolmens like Granja of Toriñuelo (in Badajoz) and Azután (in the west of the province of Toledo) .

The remains of the Dolmens 12 consist of annular prepared orthostats from granite , which form a circular chamber about 5.0 meters in diameter. The average height of the orthostats is 1.75 m. It is surpassed by the two entrance blocks with a height of around 2.0 m.

Five of the stones (probably also the original stone no. 5 that was replaced) are engraved on the inside.

  • Stone number 4 bears most types of engraving, with an eleven-rayed sun motif about 24.0 cm in diameter. The 41 × 22 cm vertical, feathered motif with bowls at the top and bottom is unique among the megalithic engravings of the Iberian Peninsula . At the bottom, an approximately 54.0 cm long, horizontal snake motif points to a small bowl 4.0 cm in diameter. There are several bowls between 3.0 and 8.0 cm in diameter at the bottom of the stone.
  • Orthostat No. 6 has bowls up to 10 cm in diameter, some of them with long grooves (up to 55 cm).
  • The orthostats 7 and 9 have more difficult to identify motifs.
  • Orthostat No. 8 shows an oval recess of 31 × 19 cm in the upper part, in the middle part a similar leaf-shaped motif as that on No. 4, but in a horizontal position, crowned by a bowl of 4 cm and in the lower part a bowl and a bowl hook-shaped motif.

The investigations point to an approximately 9.0 meter long, non-preserved corridor. There are several hypotheses for the former ceiling, a cantilever vault , a large stone slab or a wooden ceiling.

The round chamber shape shows similarities with the dolmens Cerro de la Barca , Carmonita and Granja .
