The Dominican monastery Kulm was a settlement of the Dominicans in Kulm (today Chełmno) in Prussia from the 13th to the 19th century.

location

The monastery was located at the church of St. Peter and Paul in the northeast of the old town on the city wall. The monastery buildings were north of the church, the monastery garden to the east. Today only the church remains.

history

Dominicans probably came to Kulm soon after the town charter was granted in 1233. The place was the seat of the Teutonic Order in the Kulmerland. The convent may have been founded around 1238. It was the second establishment of a Dominican monastery in the territory of the Teutonic Order (after Danzig ), the first by the Order itself.

Heidenreich , who had been provincial of the Dominicans in the province of Polonia from 1238 and became the first bishop of the bishopric of Kulm in 1243 , probably played an important role in the development of the convent . He was buried in the monastery in 1263. It is uncertain whether Hyazinth , the founder of the Dominicans in Poland, was also involved in the establishment.

Little information is available about the development of the following centuries. Since 1466 the city belonged to Polish Prussia . In 1720 the church and monastery complex were damaged in a city fire.

Since 1772 Kulm belonged to the Kingdom of Prussia . In 1829 it was decided to dissolve the monastery and the following year the monastery buildings were demolished.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul was given to a Protestant parish in 1841. It has been used as a Catholic parish church since 1945.
