Don H. Schoessler
Don H. Schoessler ( July 2, 1924 - November 15, 2017 ) was an American engineer. At Eastman Kodak, he was the chief developer of the film for aerial photographs of the corona system from US spy satellites, which operated from 1959 to 1972.
Schoessler was with Eastman Kodak from 1949 until his retirement in 1986.
The films had to meet high requirements: large temperature fluctuations, almost vacuum conditions, cosmic radiation, high film throughput speed, high resolution, small thickness in order to be able to take more film with you. The recordings had a resolution of around 10 m at the beginning and less than 3 m in the early 1970s.
He was also responsible for spy satellite films and U-2 missions at Eastman Kodak until his retirement in 1986.
In 2005 he received the Charles Stark Draper Prize , one of the highest technology awards in the USA, for his participation in the Corona project . In 1995 he received an award from the CIA for Corona.
