Artistic design on the distribution level

Don Mills is a major transportation hub. Connected to the station is an underground bus station with 14 bus platforms. Eight bus routes from the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and four bus routes from York Region Transit to the neighboring communities of the Regional Municipality of York operate from here . In addition, a park-and-ride with 366 chargeable parking spaces and a kiss-and-ride are available for commuters .

Stephen Cruise designed the art concept for the station: the tiles on the distribution level represent the geological layers through which the Sheppard Line tunnel runs, as well as depictions of the local flora and fauna. The floor patterns on the platform have bronze-colored inlays depicting fossils of fish and turtles.

history

The station opened on November 24, 2002, along with the entire Sheppard Line between Sheppard-Yonge and Don Mills. In 2003, the TTC published a report which rated an extension of the Sheppard Line eastwards in the direction of Scarborough as the highest priority, because this was the only way the line could develop its full potential. However, the province of Ontario is now setting other priorities for underground construction, which is why Don Mills will remain the terminus in the long term.

To compensate for the no longer desired extension of the subway, the city of Toronto planned two light rail routes that should have started in Don Mills. The 13.6 km Sheppard East LRT was supposed to lead above ground in an easterly direction to Scarborough; Construction began in November 2009 but stopped after a year. The southward, 17.6 km long Don Mills LRT to Pape station on the Bloor-Danforth line has also become obsolete .
