Donald Jay Geman (born September 20, 1943 in Chicago ) is an American mathematician.

Geman studied English literature at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a bachelor's degree in 1965 and received his doctorate in mathematics under Michael Barry Marcus at Northwestern University in 1970 ( horizontal-window conditioning and the zeros of stationary processes ). From 1970 he taught at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst , where he was retired as Distinguished Professor in 2001. He was then a professor at Johns Hopkins University and has also been a regular visiting professor at the École normal supérieure de Cachan in Paris since 2001 .

He deals with machine learning, computer vision, image processing, bioinformatics and statistical methods. In a highly cited work with his brother Stuart Geman , he introduced Gibbs sampling in 1984 and applied the algorithm to image processing. With Y. Amit, he introduced randomized decision trees (Random Forests, Decision Forests) in the 1990s.

He is a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics and SIAM and a member of the National Academy of Sciences . He is one of the ISI Highly Cited Researchers.
