Donald J. Mastronarde

Donald John Mastronarde (* 1948 ) is an American Graecist .

life and work

Mastronarde studied at Amherst College (BA 1969) and Oxford University (1971 BA). In 1974 he received his PhD from the University of Toronto . From 1973 he taught at the University of California at Berkeley and was Chair of the Department of Classics from 1993 to 2000. Mastronarde Melpomene has been Distinguished Professor of Classical Languages ​​and Literature at Berkeley since 2001 . In addition, from 2001 to 2011 he was head of the Center for Research into the Collection of Tebtunis Papyri. In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Mastronarde works on Greek drama, especially Euripides , on Greek literature, on the transmission of Greek literature and on the scholias (currently on the Euripides scholias). In addition, he has published a web edition of parts of the Euripides edition of Gasparus Stiblinus (Basel 1562: edition and translation of only the Praefationes and Argumenta from Stiblin ). In addition, Mastronarde is committed to web teaching of ancient Greek.
