The Donatsturm is a striking remnant of the earlier medieval city fortifications of the Erzgebirge city of Freiberg . It dates from the middle of the 15th century and has been a listed building since the 1960s.
history
The name of the tower comes from the earlier wooden Donatskirche , which owes its name to St. Donatus of Arezzo , the patron saint of the Meissen diocese , but was demolished in 1443. The tower was built to protect Donat Gate .
After the demolition of the city walls with their doors at the beginning of the 19th century the tower served nearly a century as a granary . No other use is known.
The archway to the neighboring building that can be seen today was added in 1923.
description
The only round tower in the city wall is a three-story late Gothic building made of mostly hand-made bricks . It has an outside diameter of 14.3 meters, the inside diameter is 3.9 meters. The top floor has large cannon openings in the facade, below which smaller loopholes for handguns are incorporated. The tower is finished with a conical roof , which was added in 1515. On top there is a gold-plated tower ball and a gold-plated weather vane .
The original wall thickness of the tower was around five meters. It could only be reached via a battlement and a small gate at a height of seven meters above street level and was therefore easy to defend.
