Dongtan ( 東灘  /  东滩 , Dōngtān ) is a district of the large community of Chenjia in the district of Chongming , which is located on the island of the same name in the mouth of the Yangtze River and belongs to the city of Shanghai in China . The large community of Chenjia administers the far east of Chongming and Dongtan is in turn the easternmost district of Chenjia, directly on the east coast of Chongming.

Nature reserve

A large part of Dongtan is taken up by the "Dongtan Bird Species Reserve" (崇明东 滩 鸟类 自然保护区), which covers the entire east coast of Chongming Island and is an important resting place for migratory birds.

Eco-city project

plan

On the island of Chongming, the first CO 2 -neutral and car - free eco-city in Asia with very high energy efficiency, well thought-out waste disposal and good air quality was to be built for almost one billion euros . The master plan was drawn up by the British planning company Arup . The first target was a population of 30,000 in 2010 and a target of 500,000 by the end of the project in 2050.

A cultivation area of 2.2 hectares per inhabitant should not be exceeded. The water supply should be operated purely environmentally neutral with solar or wind energy. Since the planned city is on an island, all ferry connections should only be allowed with environmentally neutral ships and passengers and residents should be advised to cover shorter distances on land on foot or by bike.

For longer journeys in the 86 square kilometer urban area, only vehicles with an emission-free drive should have been allowed. The air-polluting vehicles with internal combustion engines should be parked in a specially set up parking lot in front of the city.

It was a similar concept to the projected eco-city Masdar , a district of Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates .

fail

The eco-city project should essentially have been completed at the opening of Expo 2010 in China. By May 2009 a tunnel and a bridge on the island as well as half a dozen wind generators and an ecological farm had been completed, but the planned houses, the planned sewage treatment plant and the planned energy park were not built; the project has been discontinued and all references to Dongtan have been removed from the homepage of the Shanghai Expo.
