The village linden tree in Alberschwende is about 800 to 1000 years old . It stands on the village square in front of the parish church in the municipality of Alberschwende in the Bregenzerwald in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . The linden tree is one of the oldest trees in Vorarlberg and the oldest in the country.

history

According to a legend, the first settler, Alberich, brought the linden tree to Alberschwende as a hat ornament and planted it at the current location. Presumably the linden tree had the function of a court linden tree in the Middle Ages . The hollowed-out tree threatened to die off around 1900, this was prevented with earthfills. The asphalting of the village square again damaged the tree and worsened the situation of the ailing tree. The then freestanding roots were covered with the earthfill on which the benches are today. In 1974 the linden tree underwent major operations and has been renovated again and again since then. In 2011 the linden tree was in acute danger. On October 22nd, the square around the linden tree had to be cordoned off because the standing and traffic safety was no longer given. The community announced on its homepage that the tree was infested with the fire crust fungus and that the inside was severely decomposed. In a rescue operation on November 3, 2011, the lifespan of the linden tree was extended by a few years by trimming the crown, restoring it and securing it.
