The Roman Catholic parish church Alberschwende is located south of the cemetery in the center of the Bregenzerwald community of Alberschwende in the Bregenz district in Vorarlberg . It is consecrated to St. Martin and belongs to the Bregenz Dean's Office in the Feldkirch diocese . The building is a listed building .

history

Originally the church was a branch of Bregenz . The church has been looked after by the Mehrerau monastery since around 1110 . The blessed Merbod came from this monastery and worked as a chaplain in Alberschwende. He was slain around 1120 in the area of ​​today's Merbod Chapel . Around the same time, Rudolf von Pfullendorf , Count of Bregenz, gave the church and the patronage rights to the Mehrerau monastery. The church was first mentioned in a document in 1427. The current building was built between 1854 and 1855. The church consecration took place in 1862. A comprehensive renovation took place between 1999 and 2003.

Exterior

The church is a mighty neo-Romanesque church with a retracted polygonal east-facing choir under a shared hipped roof. A tower adjoins the north of the choir. The nave has a circumferential base band and a coved cornice under the roof approach . The facade is structured by two corner pilasters and four coupled arched windows. There is a rose window above the main portal . It is flanked by two pillars. The south portal, Gate of the Brother to St. Martin, and the north portal, the Gate of Jesus as Christ Salvator , were created in 1979 by Siegfried Gridle as bronze reliefs. The west portal with the bronze relief Purgatory was created by Engelbert Gridle in 1980 .

The north tower is designed with corner pilasters and arched sound openings as well as four small arched openings on the north and east sides. The conclusion is straight, above it is a pointed helmet.

Interior

Inside the church, a hall with a flat ceiling over a surrounding cornice. The nave walls are structured with coupled arched windows and wide wall pilasters. The stucco cartouches are painted, as are the capitals and the window crowning . A recessed and round choir arch separates the nave from the recessed 5/8 choir with a flat ceiling over a surrounding cornice. In the front wall there are coupled arched windows and a circular window.

The church is painted with frescoes . In the choir, Christ and the children are labeled "1855 Rick". On the side angels are painted with the Easter candle and a funeral torch. Symbols of the church are depicted in painted cartouches. On the left wall of the choir is depicted God the Father with angels playing music , the Adoration of the Kings and the twelve year old Jesus in the temple . On the right-hand side of the choir the Holy Spirit and Mary Magdalene are depicted as penitents , in the choir arch John the Baptist and four prophets and on the choir arch the Lamb of God with two angels . To the left there are frescoes by the evangelists Matthew and John , to the right Mark and Luke . Johann Kärle painted the figures in the choir .

The frescoes in the nave were painted by Johann Kaspar Rick in 1880 , labeled “C. Rick "; in front Christ triumphant with St. Mary in a chariot pulled by the four evangelist symbols. He is accompanied by the four Church Fathers and angels who scatter flowers. In the middle of the nave wall, God the Father is surrounded by the nine choirs of angels . K. Rick painted the picture in 1880. The episcopal ordination of St. Martin was also done by K. Rick. The symbols of the seven sacraments are shown on the ceiling strip.

In the glass paintings the Eight Beatitudes are depicted in the form of saints. The paintings come from the Tyrolean glass painting establishment from 1933/34. There are decorative windows on the facade side. In the nave are on the left St. Cecilia , St. Habrila, St. Elisabeth , St. Anna , two angels, the blessed Ilga, the St. Notburga , the St. Agnes as well as the St. Theriesia , on the right the blessed Merbod , the St. Joseph , the saint Wendelin , St. Gebhard , two angels, St. Vincent de Paul , St. Martin and St. Sebastian are depicted. In the chancel, the stained glass windows show the Annunciation on the left , and St. Mary with Child and the crucifix on the right .

On the new altar, which was rebuilt according to old plans as part of the renovation between 1999 and 2003, there is a tabernacle with a relief showing Jesus with the four evangelist symbols. The left side altar is a neo-Romanesque structure. The altarpiece with St. Mary and the Child was painted by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden in 1861 . It is flanked by figures of St. Theresa (left) and St. Filomena (right). On the predella, Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena kneel left and right in front of Mary with the child . The right side altar is also a neo-Romanesque structure with an altarpiece by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden. It shows the glorification of St. Martin . The picture is flanked by figures of St. Rupert (left) and St. Wendelin (right). The predella figures represent the heart of Jesus and two angels.

The neo-Romanesque pulpit with the four evangelist figures on the basket was created around 1855/1860. The sound cover bears a figure of Christ. The organ was rebuilt in 1939 by the organ building company Gebrüder Mayer . There is also a figure of King David from the 18th century. The former high altar picture in the choir by Melchior Paul von Deschwanden from 1861 shows the cross of Jesus with St. Mary and St. John . The communion grid dates from 1855, the confessional with the relief of Christ as the Good Shepherd from the end of the 19th century. The Stations of the Cross are copies after Martin von Feuerstein , painted by Waldner in 1934.

A stone figure of Blessed Merbod by Gottfried Bechtold based on a model by Alwin Flory is located in a niche on the outer south wall .
