Bechtold completed his apprenticeship as a stonemason in Hallein and, starting with sculpture, he deals with other media such as film, video or photography and uses the latest technical possibilities such as laser or computer technologies.

The best known of his works of the 1970s and early 1980s is the concrete Porsche (1971 and 2001), a cast of his Porsche 911 . At Documenta 5 in Kassel , he realized the work 100 days of presence in Kassel . His work Album fotografico , 1973 , is visible in the Museo cantonale d'arte in Lugano .

For the Austria Center Vienna in 1986 he created the intercontinental sculpture from monoliths from five continents, which are connected by a laser beam that changes over the course of the day .

In 2006 , the 7 meter high sculpture “Ready Maid” was created in front of the Bregenz Festival Hall . The inverted tree made of polished bronze is a striding tree woman, an antipode, a diametrically opposed art object to the performances, according to the renowned Vorarlberg artist. The sculpture stands in a slight depression, which, depending on the amount of rain, turns into a water-based paint and mirror surface up to 15 centimeters deep.

In autumn 2016, Bechtold was honored with a comprehensive solo exhibition at Lentos Linz .
