Helmut Fend

Helmut Fend (born December 26, 1940 in Hohenems , Vorarlberg ) is an Austrian education professor.

After graduating from high school in 1960 and training as a primary school teacher, he taught at one-class primary schools in Vorarlberg. He studied at the University of Innsbruck and completed a study visit to the University of London in 1965/66 . In 1967 he obtained a doctorate in educational science and psychology at the University of Innsbruck. From 1968 he worked at the Institute for Educational Science at the University of Konstanz and at the Center for Educational Research. In 1978/79 he was head of the State Institute for Schools and Further Education of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia in Düsseldorf. From 1987 he worked as a full professor for educational psychology at the University of Zurich . He has been retired since 2006.

Fend's early works developed a sociological school theory . His research and teaching focuses at the University of Zurich are youth development, educational systems and school development. So he developed the offer-use model for teaching.

His dissertation Socialization and Upbringing (1969) is still a standard work in educational science .
