Ottersleben village pond

The village pond Ottersleben is a small standing water in at Magdeburg belonging district Ottersleben .

Several sources that come to light here are responsible for its creation. Today, the water quality is rather poor due to the pollution from agricultural land. Today the pond is in the local area of Ottersleben. However, apart from a single courtyard, the area was still undeveloped into the 19th century. The area was known as The Bird Song .

history

A first depiction on a map dates back to 1684. The water in the pond, which came from an aquifer running from the heights near Hohendodeleben, was of good drinking water quality. Many wells in the area only produced salty water, which was rather unsuitable for drinking. The pond was therefore of great importance for the drinking water supply of the place. The brewing water was also taken from here, which gave the pond the nickname brewing pond . Overflowing water flowed into the Beeke , today's Eulegraben . The pond bank was lined with trees.

The pond served as a place of execution . On June 29, 1718, the widow Apollonia Solter was drowned in the pond. She has been charged with killing her illegitimate child.

Probably after the construction of the street Am Dorfteich in 1811 and in connection with the paving of the street around 1850, the pond was converted into a horse pond and bordered with quarry stones on the west and east sides. At the southern and northern ends, the pavement sank into the pond, the floor of which had been completely paved. Horses and teams could be led through the pond, with the team leader working from one of the side walls. Due to the dirt that was regularly carried into the pond, regular cleaning was necessary. A public pump , the so-called Schlucke, was built to draw water .

Two large hand pumps were later installed on the western side of the pond for the volunteer fire brigade founded in 1900 , with which the fire brigade's water truck could be filled.

After the end of the Second World War and the reorganization of agriculture in Ottersleben, which was part of the GDR , the pond quickly lost its function as a horse pond. The large farms that now existed quickly gave up horses as draft animals. For a short time the pond served as an extinguishing water basin. With the connection of Ottersleben to the central water supply in 1952, however, this function became superfluous.

Discharged sewage, a lack of cleaning and maintenance led to the complete neglect of the pond. In autumn 1998 the renovation of the pond was initiated as part of a job creation measure. During the initial cleaning it was found that the paving of the pond was still completely intact. The concrete walls erected instead of the old quarry stone walls were torn down and replaced by quarry stone walls. The pump was moved to a new location, the surrounding area was partially paved, with trees and historicizing lanterns. The work was completed at the end of August 1999.
